As the death toll of the Ebola outbreak continues to rise, Tuesday’s Google Doodle celebrated the 100th birthday of the man who helped put an end to the post-World War II polio epidemic with the first-ever inactive vaccine for the disease.

The doodle features medical researcher Jonas Salk wearing a white lab coat and standing on a 1950’s-era city sidewalk as people celebrate around him. Two children are holding up a poster that reads “Thank you Dr. Salk” and another is selling a newspaper that reads “Vaccine Works” across the front page over a picture of Salk.
