Game of Thrones scribe George R.R. Martin, known to millions of fans as GRRM, publishes his first new Westeros-based book since 2011’s Dance with Dragons Tuesday. Unfortunately, it’s not Winds of Winter, the next in the Song of Ice and Fire series, but it is the best-looking alternative
Stuffed with rich images and essays on the history of Westeros, it’s called A World of Ice and Fire, and it has the unusual distinction of becoming the #1 best-selling book on Amazon before it even published.
Co-written with two of the ultimate Game of Thrones fans, Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson, the series know-it-alls who run Westeros.org, this coffee table book has been in the works since 2008. Martin was supposed to contribute a few sidebars on the various lands in and around the continent of Westeros; he ended up typing 300,000 words of sidebar. “At some point,” said Martin in a 92nd St Y interview, “my editor’s head exploded.” Read more…
